The annual conservation poster contest provides kindergarteners through 12th graders with an opportunity to share their thoughts about water and related natural resource issues. Posters are evaluated on the following criteria: conservation message, originality, visual effectiveness, and universal appeal. At the local level, students of the winning posters are given prizes, ribbons and their posters are displayed at the Lake County Fair.

2008 TOPIC: What is one of the many land uses in Florida?

Amanda Sunseri, a seventh grader at Cecil E. Gray Middle School in Groveland, won first place in the speech contest held on Nov. 12, 2008. The Lake Soil & Water Conservation District sponsors the annual contest, which is designed to develop leadership and stimulate interest in conserving natural resources. Speeches are judged on content, composition, delivery and time criteria. By winning at the local level, Amanda was eligible to compete at the Area IV Association of Florida Conservation Districts Contest where she received the second place award.

2007 TOPIC: What is the future of Florida's renewable energies?

Jett Baumann, a Eustis High School Senior, won first place in the local speech contest held on Nov. 14, 2007. Jett competed at the Association of Florida Conservation Districts Area IV Contest in May 2008 and received the second place award.

 

Lake Regional Envirothon

The sixth annual Lake Regional Envirothon was held on Feb. 19, 2009 with a new record of 17 teams from Lake and Marion counties participating. Students gathered at the Hickory Point Recreational Facility in Tavares to compete in a written exam and hands-on investigations.

The five-member teams were given 25 minutes at each station representing aquatics, forestry, wildlife, soils and a selected current environmental issue, which was "Biodiversity in a Changing World."

1st Place: "Tuataras!", Advisor Sandi Good, Leesburg High School
2nd Place: "Killer Tomatoes", Advisor Betsy Farner, Tavares High School
3rd Place: "Introduced Species", Advisor Sandi Good, Leesburg High School

The first place team "Tuataras!" from Leesburg High School, went on to compete in the Florida Envirothon in Hillsborough County on April 25, 2009.

Lake County Land Judging

Lake County Teams
Win at State Land
Judging Competition

East Ridge High School Blue Team and Clermont Middle School Team A represented Lake County at the state competition in Alachua County on March 27, 2009 and each won first place in their division.

East Ridge High School Blue Team went on to compete in the National Land Judging Contest in Oklahoma in May 2009.

The annual Land Judging competition was held on March 5, 2009 at Ellis Acres, a Lake County public lands property in Paisley.

The Lake Soil & Water Conservation District invited students in Future Farmers of America to test their knowledge by judging soils from four pits that were selected by Richard Ford, Soil Scientist with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Individual scorecards were marked for evaluation of characteristics, planned use and limitations.

3rd place: Clermont Middle School Team A

Annual Tree Give-Away

The Lake Soil & Water Conservation District, in partnership with the Florida Division of Forestry, held its annual Tree Give-Away event on Jan. 23, 2009. Each person received one tree (about 6-18 inches) of each variety: Dogwood, Red Bay, Southern Magnolia, Bald Cypress and Red Cedar. The trees were free, but donations were collected and will be used toward next year’s event.

The next Tree Give-Away event will be held in January 2010.
