Important Notices
Medical
The County has two plans; an HMO and a PPO plan. The BlueCare (HMO - Open Access) and BlueChoice (PPO) plans provided through BlueCross and BlueShield of Florida (BCBS). The HMO and PPO networks include both Lake County hospitals as well as providers state-wide.
Through BCBS, members may now have access to coverage outside of the state of Florida. The BlueCare (HMO - Open Access) plan offers guesting privileges in other BCBS networks around the country, and the BlueChoice (PPO) plan offers the BlueCard program which allows access to doctors and hospitals around the world.
Numerous enhancements have been made to the medical coverage including a 24-hour live nurse line, health management and wellness programs, and Blue Compliments. Blue Compliments provides members with a wide range of discounted services for vision care, alternative medicine, hearing care, weight management and fitness memberships. Flexible Spending Accounts
Dental
There are three types of dental plans offered through CompBenefits. https://www.mycompbenefits.com
- Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) allows employee to use any dentist; in or out of network. The employee pays a percentage of the Reasonable & Customary Charge, and there is an annual cap on benefits paid by the plan.
Vision
Under the VSP Vision Plan, offered through Ameritas, members have the option of obtaining services from a network of providers who accept the fees as full payment for services under prearranged guidelines. Additionally, members have access to vision-related discounts.
Long Term Disability
- Employer pays full cost for long term disability
- Employee has option to buy a rider that shortens the elimination period (the waiting period before benefits are paid)
Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance
- Employer pays for the employee’s basic life and AD&D insurance (equal to one year’s annual salary with a minimum of $20,000)
- Employees have option to buy additional supplementary Life and AD&D insurance for themselves and their dependents

Retirement & Deferred Compensation
- Florida Retirement System (FRS)
All regular employees are eligible upon employment, for enrollment in the Florida Retirement System program. There are two (2) plans available: Pension Plan or Investment Plan, which is paid 100% by the County. New employees are enrolled automatically in the Pension Plan on date of hire. Choice period to select the Investment Plan runs until the end of the fifth month after date of hire. Employees are vested in the program after six (6) years for the Pension Plan and one (1) year for the Investment Plan, and there is a provision for disability pensions.
- Deferred Compensation (457)
All regular employees are eligible upon employment, to defer from federal income tax the lesser of amount from table below or 100% of taxable compensation per year. There are two providers to choose from: Nationwide Retirement Solutions or ICMA.
