Lake County Environmental Outreach Program

The Department of Environmental Utilities Management Services, with the cooperation of the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection, has developed the Lake County Environmental Outreach Program. This unique service is designed to give small businesses and other organizations located in Lake County a responsible, cost-effective method to properly dispose of conditionally exempt small quantities of hazardous waste.

The cost to participate in the Lake County Environmental Outreach Program varies depending on the type and quantity of waste present for disposal, as well as the County’s current contracted disposal prices with a licensed hazardous waste management company. A sample price list is available upon request. All waste presented for disposal through this program is sorted and packaged for shipment by County staff along with the expertise of a licensed hazardous waste management company. The waste is then transported to and disposed of at a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act permitted facility.

All registered businesses or organizations that participate with the Lake County Environmental Outreach Program will receive a completed hazardous waste disposal receipt. It will show all information required by the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection for Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection requires participants to file the disposal receipt for a minimum of three years.

Any business or organization that meets the following criteria may apply to participate in the program:

  • Business or organization is located in Lake County
  • A one-time or special small amount of hazardous waste requiring disposal.
  • Business or organization meets the definition of a Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG). To meet this requirement the business cannot generate more than 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of hazardous waste or less than 1 kilogram of an acute hazardous waste in one calendar month, and can never accumulate more than 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of hazardous waste on-site at any given time. Generators that exceed this amount fall into a separate category by Federal Code and State Rule.

For more information, call (352) 343-3776.
If a business or organization meets the above requirements and would like to participate in the Lake County Environmental Outreach Program, complete an application and return it to:

Lake County Environmental Utilities
Attn: Special Waste Division
13130 County Landfill Road
Tavares, FL 32778

A staff member will follow up on the request and provide additional program details. After receiving approval for disposal, waste may be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center at the Lake County Landfill on any Wednesday or the first Saturday of each month between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cash payment is required at the time of disposal unless other arrangements have been made. For more information or to establish an account, call (352) 343-3776 ext 1684.

The Department of Environmental Utilities offers the Pollution Prevention Program to Lake County businesses free of charge. The Program assists businesses with waste reduction techniques and proper disposal options. All Lake County businesses are eligible for this program. For more information, call (352) 343-3776.
