The Power of Pink: Lake County firefighters wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month

The Lake County Fire Rescue Division will be wearing pink shirts as part of their uniforms during the month of October to show their support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"By wearing the shirts, we want to bring awareness to women that have experienced cancer," said Brian Gamble a Lieutenant/Paramedic with Lake County Fire Rescue. "We also want to show our support to the survivors and families, as well as remember the victims who have lost their battle."

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among American women. For 2011, it is estimated that about 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women, with roughly 39,520 women dying from breast cancer.

The pink shirts are also available to purchase for $12 from local firefighter officers, and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 3990 website at https://secure.unasecure.net/activestore/index.cfm?start=yes&siteID=iafflocal3990. All proceeds from the shirt sales will go to support a cancer charity in Lake County.

Other efforts by Lake County firefighters include support for the Cares Enough to Wear Pink campaign. As part of the campaign, Lake County Firefighter Mike Amedeo has volunteered his time to drive a pink fire truck for the 2011 Pink Heals Tour for the next two weeks throughout Florida.
