Navigational Tool Descriptions

Zoom In

This tool allows you to ‘zoom in’ on an area of the map to closely view it. Select the tool, then point and click anywhere you want on the map. This will be the center of the new map display. To zoom in more precisely, draw a "Zoom-in box" over the area you want to zoom in to. To draw the zoom-in box, click and hold the left mouse button while dragging the cursor over the area you want to magnify, then release. The new map extent will be the area defined by the box.

Zoom Out

Use this tool to ‘zoom out’ and view a larger map area. Like the Zoom In tool, point and click anywhere on the map. You can also draw a "Zoom-out box" over the area you want to view. Click and hold the left mouse button while dragging the cursor over the area you want to reduce, then release. The specified area will be reduced and a larger area of the map will be displayed. As a rule, the smaller the box, the larger the area displayed.

Full Extent

Zooms back to the initial County Map extent. This is the maximum extent of the map.

Zoom To Active Layer

Zoom to the maximum extent of the active layer.

Zoom Previous Zoom back to the previous map extent.
Pan

Use this tool to view adjacent areas of the map that are not in the current map view. Within the map area, click and hold the left mouse button, and drag the map in any direction you desire. Then release the button to display the new area.

Identify

The identify tool allows you to get attribute information about a feature. First, make the layer you want more information about active, (to activate a layer, see the Active Layer Selection below) then click on the map to get information about that feature. For example, if you want to know the name of a street, make the street layer active. Then click on any street you want. The attributes for that street are displayed in a new popup window. You may click on another street without closing to popup window. When finished, close the window.

Query

This tool performs queries about the data associated with the active layer. The active layer must also be made visible for this tool to work. You will be able to find and display specific feature attributes based on a query string you construct. To construct the string, select the field of your choice from the drop-down menu under "Field" in the query window. Similarly, elect the operand and the sample value. Then click the "Add to Query String" button to display the string in the adjacent window. (NOTE: you may type in your string from scratch provided you type in an existing field. You can also type in a value that does not exist in the sample list). Finally, click the "Execute button to view the resulting map.The map displayed will contain all matching records and the actual list of the records will be displayed in the query window. On the left of each record, are numbers that will link to the actual coordinates of each record. Click the relevant number to zoom to the record of your choice. You will also notice that at the bottom of the records list is a link that allows you to zoom to the full extent of all the records listed.

To clear the selection, click on the Clear Map tool .

Measure

The "Measure" tool allows you to measure distances in feet by clicking on two or more points. The length of each individual segment is displayed along with the cumulative distance calculation resulting from a measurement between multiple points, and like in a route, the actual traverse is drawn. For example, use this tool to find the driving distance along a road between two points. Be patient after clicking each point to allow the system to respond.

To clear the current measurements, click on the Clear Map tool .

Clear Map

Clears all selections previously made using Query or Identify tools.
