As part of an initiative to encourage sustainable development and green-building construction techniques, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners adopted a Green Building Ordinance on Aug. 8, 2008, that was codified in Article VIII, Chapter 6 of the Lake County Code of Ordinances.
Qualified applicants through the Lake County Green Building Program are eligible for incentives designed to provide expedited review of development and construction documents. These incentives are:
In order to qualify for these incentives, applicants are required to complete an application and certify compliance with one of several green building and development standards. To receive an application for program incentives, call the Lake County Department of Conservation & Compliance at (352) 343-9639 or log on to www.lakecountyfl.gov, keyword: compliance.
Perhaps the most important aspect of this ordinance is that it requires the County to lead by example. According to the ordinance, all County projects must meet or exceed nationally accepted green-building standards.
Lake County has met this challenge. The new Umatilla Health Clinic is currently the only Health Department clinic in the state to receive certification in the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. In addition, the new two-story office building in downtown Tavares will meet the LEED green-building rating system. The office building, which is scheduled to be completed in May 2009, will house the Tax Collector’s and Property Appraiser’s offices.
