More than 50 professionals, including business entrepreneurs, land-use planners, engineers, architects, hoteliers, civil engineers, solid-waste staff and public health & government officials, attended the “Professionals Turning Green Symposium” on June 11-12 at Lakeside Inn in Mount Dora.
The two days of presentations featured more than 20 presenters covering a variety of topics including green energy, green enterprise, green government, green construction, green lodging, conserving water resources and greening solid waste.
Several keynote speakers highlighted the presentations. During Thursday’s luncheon, Daniel Parker, Assistant Division Director of Environmental Health, in the Florida Department of Health, spoke about how the decisions land-use planners make affect the health and well being of the community. During a banquet Thursday evening, Linda Chapin, Director of the Metropolitan Center for Regional Studies at the University of Central Florida, made her final public appearance before retiring from her post at the university. The former Orange County mayor talked about the pitfalls and successes during her tenure.
The symposium was concluded on Friday afternoon with a special author’s luncheon featuring Cynthia Barnett, a reporter and editor at newspapers and magazines for 20 years. Her first book, Mirage: Florida and the Vanishing Water of the Eastern U.S., published in 2007, won the Gold medal for best nonfiction in the Florida Book Awards.
