TAVARES — Employees of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners are wrapping up by the end of the month their annual month-long benefit drive for the March of Dimes.

With proceeds from several sources including a rummage sale and raffling off gift baskets, employees to date have raised more than $6,500 for the worthy cause. However, the largest benefit event for the March of Dimes fund-raising campaign has been a plant sale.
Dozens of County employees and citizens turned out for the two-day event last week. Held at the Department of Environmental Services administrative offices located off County Road 561 in Tavares, the plant sale raised more than $2,700.
According to Patti Young, a senior customer services representative for the Lake County Department of Environmental Services who coordinated the plant sale, all the plants sold at the event were donated. About 30 different nurseries, growers and other organizations donated plants for the event including one individual who offered 1,100 Gerber daises.
“One hundred percent of everything was donated from the potting soil to the plastic bags to put it in,” Young said. “We had one person that donated a $50 plant and others that donated a whole truckload of plants."
An annual tradition for Lake County employees, raising funds for the March of Dimes used to be rather competitive between various County departments. It is not that way anymore says Young.
“When I was first here that is how they did it, but now we all just try to help each other,” she said. “It is more of a countywide thing to me. It’s all for the March of Dimes in my mind.”
The Lake County employees’ March of Dimes benefit for this year may be coming to a close, however, there is more volunteer work to be done. According to Cindy Heffler, a customer services specialist for the Lake County Department of Environmental Services who coordinates the entire benefit drive for Lake County employees, several County employees will also participate in the countywide March of Dimes benefit walk to be held April 30 at Wooton Park in Tavares.
“The employees support the March of Dimes because they believe in the organization,” she said.
