Prescription drugs, hazardous waste to be collected in Groveland
The Lake County Solid Waste Division, in partnership with the city of Groveland’s Police Department, is encouraging Lake County residents to dispose of unwanted medications and toxic materials in a safe and environmentally sensitive way – helping to prevent improper use by others – at an upcoming Prescription Drugs and Household Hazardous Waste Collection. The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 23 in the parking lot of the Groveland Police Department, 408 Orange St., Groveland.

County offices, libraries, LakeXpress, all solid-waste operations to close for Memorial Day
All offices of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners, Clerk of Courts, Property Appraiser, Supervisor of Elections and Tax Collector will be closed Monday, May 27, for Memorial Day. Offices will reopen Tuesday, May 28. All Lake County Solid Waste residential collection services will be suspended Monday and resume Tuesday.

Animal Services suspends use of night-drop kennels during state health department’s rabies alert
Animal Services Division has been required to temporarily suspend the use of the night-drop kennels that residents can use to give up pets for adoption. The suspension will be effective through July 13, which is 60 days from the date of issuance.

Orlando Magic’s senior VP to speak at Eustis High School baccalaureate celebration
Pat Williams, senior vice president of the NBA’s Orlando Magic, will be the keynote speaker at the baccalaureate celebration for Eustis High School’s class of 2013. The ceremony will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 26 at the First Baptist Church of Eustis, 3551 E. Orange Ave., Eustis.

UF/IFAS Lake County Extension to begin new ‘Saturday in the Garden’ series
“Saturday in the Garden” is a new speaker series offered by UF/IFAS Extension, Lake County on the first Saturday of each month. The speaker series will feature an hour-long class on “Florida-Friendly Landscaping,” and will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1 at the Lake County Agricultural Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares.
