TAVARES — During its last two meetings, May 3 and May 10, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners has honored five different teams of local high school athletes for their continued excellence.

Proclamations were bestowed on the Eustis High School boys basketball team and the Tavares High School girls basketball team on May 3. The Tavares Bulldogs recently captured the Class-3A District Basketball Championship while the Eustis Panthers earned their third straight district championship at the Class 3-A State Basketball Championship.

“The Board of County Commissioners recognizes these teams and individual achievements and wishes these coaches and young athletes much success and continued personal growth as they continue their careers and interests in sports,” said Commissioner Debbie Stivender.

At its following regularly scheduled meeting on May 10, the Board recognized the Leesburg High School boys basketball team, the East Ridge High School boys basketball team and the local high school athletes that participated in this year’s state Special Olympics games in Tampa, Fla.

The Leesburg Yellow Jackets were honored for their victory in the Class 4-A District Basketball Championship. The Board recognized the East Ridge Knights as they won their first district championship at the Class 5-A State Basketball Championship. The 21 Special Olympics athletes from Tavares High School received recognition from the Board for competing in the state games. Special honors were bestowed upon Jessica McConaghy, Jamie Chavis, Donnell Simmons, Lauren Carter and D.J. Cherry, who all earned state medals at the competition.

Commissioners Catherine Hanson and Debbie Stivender agreed that by promoting the student-athlete achievements it would further promote the young adults to continue healthy and active lifestyles.
