TAVARES — Residents and business owners in the Mount Plymouth and Sorrento communities are invited to a workshop being held on Tuesday, Feb. 28 beginning at 9 a.m. on the proposed community redevelopment area (CRA) in the east Lake communities. The workshop will take place in the Board Chambers at the Lake County Administration Building, located on the second floor at 315 W. Main St., Tavares.
After recent feedback was received from interested parties, changes were made to the boundaries of the proposed Mount Plymouth/Sorrento CRA, including removal of the Mount Plymouth Golf Club community. The new map can be viewed online at www.lakecountyfl.gov/mpscra, or by visiting the Lake County Administration Building rotunda; the East Lake County Library, located at 31340 S. County Road 437, Sorrento; or the Mount Plymouth IGA, located at 31431 N. County Road 435, Sorrento.
This past August, residents and business owners from the area participated in an informational meeting to discuss the potential of a CRA in Mount Plymouth/Sorrento. During the meeting, Commissioner Leslie Campione, along with Lake County staff, discussed the benefits of a CRA, such as the funding of roadway, sidewalk and lighting improvements.
In October, an area on the county’s website was created to host information regarding CRAs, along with a link to a map that shows the proposed boundary and details on the timeline and process for establishing the CRA. Also made available was an online survey, which consisted of five questions and a general comment field.
During a county commission workshop held in December, a presentation was given that outlined the results of the survey, and gave residents and business owners an opportunity to give feedback and ask questions regarding the proposed CRA.
Under state law, a CRA is an area that is targeted for redevelopment and revitalization by a local government. It must meet a number of state requirements and be approved by the Board of County Commissioners. The creation of a CRA does not increase a property owner’s taxes or assessed value and does not change the land use designations, but is intended to encourage private investment in the area.
