Annual tree giveaway to be held in honor of Arbor Day

RELEASE DATE: January 4, 2017

TAVARES — In honor of Arbor Day, the Lake Soil & Water Conservation District is giving away bare-root tree seedlings at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19. The event, held in partnership with the Florida Forest Service, will be hosted at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension Center Discovery Gardens Classroom, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares.

Available tree varieties will include Dahoon Holly, Chickasaw Plum, Redbud, Green Ash and Slash Pine. The trees are between eight and 24 inches tall and have been harvested when dormant without soil around the roots, making them easier to transport and plant.

The seedlings are free to the public, but donations are accepted to help support the tree giveaway program. Trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

Those attending the giveaway event are also invited to explore Discovery Gardens, a 3.5-acre habitat next to the Extension Office, which is open from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and free to visit.

Established by the Florida Legislature, the Lake Soil & Water Conservation District, a governmental subdivision of the State of Florida, was organized in 1944 by local people for the purpose of promoting and encouraging the wise use, management and general conservation of the county’s soil, water and related natural resources. The District is committed to preserving and enhancing the quality of life in Lake County through conservation of its natural resources.

For more information on the tree giveaway, contact the Lake Soil & Water Conservation District at 352-253-1646 or email Patty Fletcher at pfletcher@ufl.edu.
