TAVARES — The Lake Soil and Water Conservation District hosted the Fifth Annual Lake Regional Envirothon on Feb. 20 at the Hickory Point Recreational Facility in Tavares with 14 teams competing.

Envirothons are a natural resource education event for high-school students. Five-member teams are led by an advisor and study prepared resource materials on aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and a selected current environmental issue. For this competition, the environmental issue was “Recreational Impacts on Natural Resources.” The competition included a written exam and hands-on investigations in a field setting. The top scoring team will compete in the Florida Envirothon on April 12 at Myakka River State Park in Sarasota.
Local winners included:
• First place — “Catharsisists” from Leesburg High School, advisors Sandi Good and Joan Wukotich
• Second place — “Angry Beavers” from Leesburg High School, advisors Sandi Good and Joan Wukotich
• Third place — “The Killer Tomatoes” from Tavares High School, advisor Betsy Farner
