The drug/alcohol component of Teen Court will serve as an intervention and deterrent for experimental substance users by providing intensive case management to eligible drug involved youth and their families.
Separate Teen Drug Court hearings will be held, with sentencing sanctions specific to substance use. In addition to the traditional Teen Court consequences, the Drug Court jury could impose attendance at AA/NA meetings, victim awareness classes, a tour of the hospital and/or morgue to learn what happens in cases of drug overdose or meet with a local funeral home director to discuss arrangements should their risky behavior continue and lead to death. All Drug Court defendants will be required to attend substance abuse awareness counseling and submit to random urinalysis. Referrals for services necessary to address the problems that affect the juvenile’s ability to live a substance-free life will be coordinated by the Teen Drug Court Counselor.
The goal is for young people to carry over and apply what they learn through Teen Court when confronted with other difficult choices and situations in their lives.
