Lake County hosts hazardous waste collection event
Lake County is encouraging county residents to dispose of unwanted household hazardous materials in a safe and environmentally conscious way at its first collection event of the new year.

Government offices to close for Martin Luther King Jr. Day
TAVARES — All offices of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners, Clerk of Courts, Property Appraiser, Supervisor of Elections and Tax Collector will be closed Monday, Jan. 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Offices will reopen with regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Lake County’s Solid Waste residential curbside collection will operate as normal and the Central Landfill Facility, located at 13130 County Landfill Road, Tavares, will be open on the holiday. However, the Solid Waste administration will be closed. LakeXpress, Lake County’s public transportation service, will not operate on Jan. 21. Lake County Connection, Lake County’s paratransit service, will provide only life-sustaining medical trips such as to and from dialysis appointments, on the federal holiday. The Lake County Animal Shelter, located at 28123 County Road 561, Tavares, will be closed on the holiday. The Lake County Extension Center and Discovery Gardens, located at 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares, will also be closed, along with all Lake County Library System libraries.

The Lake County Public Safety Department’s Fire Rescue Division will dedicate a new fire truck in honor of fallen Lake County Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Jack Fillman.

New Lake County Animal Shelter to break ground
The new Lake County Animal Shelter will have the necessary amount of space to temporarily house hundreds of dogs, cats and other pets as they wait for adoption in the brand new 31,000-square-foot facility.
