TAVARES —Amidst the activities and festivities at the Lake County Fair from April 7-16, residents can meet some local heroes, learn about some important community initiatives and voice their opinion of what Lake County should look like in the future.
All of these exciting opportunities and more will be available at a host of Lake County Government-sponsored booths at the fair. Among the countywide agencies participating in the fair are the Sheriff’s Office, Lake-Sumter Emergency Medical Services, Health Department, Supervisor of Elections Office, 4-H Youth Development Program, Soil and Water Conservation District and the County departments of Environmental Services, Growth Management and Public Safety.
The Lake County Fair began in 1921 as the Florida Sportsman Exposition. Even in the beginning, the event not only entertained residents but also educated them about local services. The 2005 version of the fair will be no different as numerous employees from various County agencies will staff several different booths and exhibits.
One of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners-sponsored booths this year will highlight the comprehensive planning process. A comprehensive plan is the foundation for local planning as it acts as an outline of the community's vision and priorities.
Planners began the process of updating the comprehensive plan last year. The task of drafting the 2025 Lake County Comprehensive Plan is a partnership between citizens, municipalities, county government and other local and regional entities. With completion of the project expected next year, the new plan titled “Planning Horizon 2025” will provide flexible guidelines for policymakers, land managers and land users about how to conserve, rehabilitate or develop an area.
At the Planning Horizon 2025 booth at the fair, staff will be asking for the public’s input though a survey about how they view their community.
In addition, National County Government Week will be celebrated at several Lake County-sponsored booths during the fair. Stop by and visit with several local heroes including firefighters at the Lake County Department of Public Safety booth.
The Lake County Fair, 2101 County Road 452, Eustis, is scheduled from April 7-16. Gates open at 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call the fair office at (352) 357-7111 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
