Lake-Sumter MPO to host consensus-building workshop

LEESBURG — The Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will host a “Transportation Consensus-Building Workshop” on Friday, Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lake-Sumter Community College Magnolia Room located at 9501 U.S. Highway 441, Leesburg.

Citizens are invited to participate in the consensus-building workshop to guide the development of the 2025 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The Lake-Sumter MPO, the regional transportation agency for Lake and Sumter counties, is preparing the 2025 LRTP, which will identify major transportation improvements needed by 2025 to accommodate future travel demand and maintain the efficient operation of the transportation network in the MPO area. The LRTP will be a multimodal plan that identifies roadway, public transportation, bicycle and pedestrian projects.

“The consensus-building workshop is a forum for a diverse group of citizens to discuss major transportation issues and, ultimately, to develop consensus on strategies to address these challenges,” said T.J. Fish, Executive Director of the Lake-Sumter MPO. “The emphasis of this workshop is on transportation needs in Lake and Sumter counties.”

Major topics to be discussed during the workshop include: review and discussion of transportation funding options; review and discussion of gaps between needs and available revenues; and development of cost affordable plans for transportation projects.

To maintain continuity, participants are requested to participate for the entire workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information about the consensus-building workshop or for citizens to reserve a seat, call the Lake–Sumter MPO office at (352) 315-0170. For those unable to attend the workshop, written comments will be accepted through Aug. 31 and may be sent to: Lake-Sumter MPO, 1616 S. 14th St., Leesburg, FL 34748.

BACKGROUND: Established in 2004, the Lake-Sumter MPO is a regional, independent agency supported through federal funds and tasked with efficiently planning for the community’s transportation needs. The purpose of the MPO is to provide a forum for a coordinated, comprehensive and continual transportation planning process. The agency is responsible for the planning of several modes of transportation and for coordinating and prioritizing projects on a regional level.
