Fees to be instituted March 1 for e-waste, tire disposal

TAVARES — The grace period for free disposal of residential electronic waste (e-waste) and tires at the Lake County Landfill and five residential drop-off centers will expire Feb. 28.

As approved by the Lake County Board of County Commissioners last September, new fees for disposing of items such as computers, televisions and printers were effective Oct. 1, 2004. The Board-approved fee schedule is set to solely recover the cost of proper disposal by the County. During the grace period, County staff has negotiated the lowest possible disposal costs for residents.

Disposal techniques for the enormous volume of electronic waste varies for each component; each having a different assortment of materials that can be either valuable, if recovered properly, or very toxic to the environment if not. While technology allows for nearly hazard-free recycling of e-waste, de-manufacturing and recovery costs have increased.

The new rates for disposal of each item of e-waste effective March 1 are as follows:

Unopened and undamaged CPU’s (computers)
Any Type
No Charge
Computer Monitors
13 – 15 inch
Any type
Computer Peripherals
Keyboard, mouse, etc.
Opened, damaged or partial CPU’s (computers)
Any type
19-inch or smaller
Larger than 19-inch
Small office
Large office
Fax Machines
Home or office
VCR, stereo, CD player units
Home use

Commercial and institutional e-waste is accepted only at the Lake County Landfill, 13130 County Landfill Road, Tavares, on Wednesdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The five residential drop-off centers will accept household e-waste from unincorporated residents only during normally scheduled hours of operation.

In addition to the new fees for e-waste, a $1 fee will be charged for disposal of each passenger car or light truck tire from unincorporated County residents at the residential drop-off centers and at the landfill. Off-road and commercial tires are accepted only at the landfill.
