Lake County’s block grant action plan outlines worthwhile community enhancements

TAVARES — The Lake County Department of Community Services has completed the 2005 fiscal year one-year action plan outlining proposed uses of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program funds.

Highlights of this year’s proposed Lake County CDBG expenditures include $340,000 for road paving in the Lake Kathryn community, $100,000 to assist the City of Tavares with Main Street streetscape improvements, $100,000 to assist the Town of Lady Lake with constructing sidewalks in neighborhoods south of County Road 466, and $110,000 to assist the Lake County Health Department with supplying prescription medications to 350 medically indigent persons.

In all, the Lake County CDBG program is proposing to fund about $1.2 million in community projects during the upcoming fiscal year, including other infrastructure projects in the towns of Montverde and Astatula.

The CDBG program is administered at the federal level by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which makes funds available to local governments. The Community Development Block Grant Division of the Department of Community Services administers the Lake County CDBG program. The Division is responsible for ensuring the funds are used to improve the living environment, quality of life and housing opportunities for low and moderate-income citizens.

The proposed CDBG action plan will be presented to the Lake County Board of County Commissioners during a public hearing on Tuesday, July 19, at the Lake County Administration Building, 315 W. Main St., Tavares.

Copies of the action plan will be available for public inspection between June 13 and July 13 during normal working hours at the Lake County Community Services Annex, 31150 Industry Drive, Tavares, or at any municipal office and library. The plan is also available online here.
