Foundation requests support for boundless playground

TAVARES — The Children's Foundation of Lake County is making a valiant effort to assist in raising funds to help build the first boundless playground in Central Florida right here in Lake County.

Founded in 2002, the Foundation is a not-for-profit, independent organization governed by an active board of directors. The Foundation's mission is to generate and manage financial resources in support of Lake County's children and families as identified by the Lake County Citizens' Commission for Children.

The most current task for the Foundation is garnering financial support for construction of a boundless playground. Lake County received a $200,000 matching grant last year through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for development of a boundless playground at Lake Idamere Park, located at the corner of State Road 19 and County Road 448 in Tavares, but more funds are needed for the specialized playground equipment.

According to Emily Lee, Lake County Children's Services Director, on a boundless playground at least 70 percent of the play activities can be enjoyed by children with physical challenges without leaving their support equipment. This specialized equipment can range in cost between $300 and $5,000.

"This is a community effort," Lee said. "The Foundation is seeking donations of time, money and ideas for fundraisers from the community, and they will be scheduling construction days where community volunteers can help construct the equipment, which will help them alleviate some of the costs."

It is anticipated that the first developmental phase of this playground, expected to begin in spring 2006, will cost approximately $765,000. Community members, businesses and philanthropic organizations that wish to contribute to the project are encouraged to read a specially designed pamphlet detailing the equipment needs.

For more information about purchasing an entire piece of equipment and having a donation placard placed near the equipment or for individual donations, call Cindi Heiligenthal at (352) 267-3905, Candi Giddens at (352) 636-2038, B.E. Thompson at (352) 551-4094 or Emily Lee at (352) 267-5943.

Several other fundraisers the Foundation is coordinating to benefit the boundless playground are monogrammed backpacks and Play 2 Live wristbands. Backpacks come in seven different varieties and can be purchased for $35 by filling out an order form. For more information about either of these fundraisers, call (352) 267-3905, (352) 636-2038 or (352) 551-4094.
