TAVARES — The adjective “new” just does not fully capture the difference between the former Lake County government portal and its successor.
“It is like night and day,” said Kelly LaFollette, Lake County Office of Communications manager. “Through countless hours of hard work by the outreach team, we were able to redesign the site making it more pleasing to the eye and easier to navigate. Continuing with the County’s outreach efforts this is one more avenue we can use to reach out to the citizens.”
A few highlights of the new www.lakecountyfl.gov site are an online calendar, digital postcards, screensavers and streaming video. However, where the distinct Lake County Web portal makes its mark is with its ease of access. The site integrates three Web addresses into one location: www.lakecountyfl.gov, www.lakecountyfl.com and www.lakefasttrack.com.
The site is sectioned into four main categories: residents, visitors, business and government. With the defined sections and a stronger search function that supports the ability to read documents and forms, Web surfers will be able to pinpoint the exact information they are searching for faster and with less hassle. The portal also offers easily accessible information and links for all services offered in Lake County, including constitutional officers.
The six-month process of redesigning the County Web site was no easy task as several interactive features had to be developed first. Job seekers can now apply online for open Lake County positions posted by the Office of Employee Services. Vendors can register on the site and view open County bids from the Office of Procurement Services. A new feature in the Building Services Division section provides the ability to view all permit activity and the status of individual permits.
By registering with the new Lake County Web site, surfers can customize the look of the Web site to their own liking, and save and e-mail individual pages. Another highly recommended feature that was added was the ability of printer-friendly pages.
To support all of these updated elements of the Web site, a new server was dedicated to host the portal. The improved Lake County Web site was programmed entirely with ASP.NET. The Microsoft-produced Web language improves performance and scalability while enhancing reliability of the site.
