THE VILLAGES — The Ninth Annual FireFight at Spanish Springs will spice up The Villages on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The chili cook-off is sponsored by the Rotary Club of The Villages Foundation and features 61 chili-cooking teams. Eight prizes, starting at $500, will be awarded to the winning chili-cooking teams. In addition, the teams will be competing for best booth prizes.
More than 15,000 visitors are expected to converge on the town square to sample the pots of steaming chili concoctions. Available at 1 p.m., a chili-tasting wristband costs $5. The event also features live entertainment provided by the Silver Star Band from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., clowns and more than 75 vendors peddling wares.
“Last year, the proceeds of this event allowed the Rotary Club of The Villages Foundation to award nine $1,000 scholarships to high-school seniors from area schools; contribute to both the Villages Elementary School and the Villages Charter School; support The Kids Christmas sponsored by area law enforcement agencies and many other community projects,” said Pete Wahl, chili chairman for the Rotary Club.
