GROVELAND — After three months, the Lake County Tourism & Business Relations Division sponsored online contest, “Lake County Great Getaway Giveaway,” concluded Aug. 30 with more than 500 entries and half of those signing up for Tourism’s quarterly newsletter and a quarter of those requesting Tourism’s new children’s CD-ROM.
“From a marketing standpoint, the contest was a success because it helped to increase awareness about Lake County as a vacation destination,” said Greg Mihalic, Director of the Tourism & Business Relations Division.
The winning entry was selected at random and belonged to Britney Metry, a senior at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan., studying political science.
“I’m going to school in Kansas, my boyfriend is a police officer here, and we were looking for places that we might want to settle down after school,” she said. “Florida is actually one of the places we are looking at, and I was looking at different counties in Florida and I stumbled upon Lake County.”
Metry and her boyfriend are planning to visit Lake County this year. As part of the winning entry, she is awarded:
• One night's stay for up to a family of four at Heron Cay Bed & Breakfast
• Xtreme picnic cooler filled with Lake County goodies
• Captain Doolittle's ECO Tour of Dora Canal (passes for up to a family of four)
• Uncle Donald's Farm (passes for up to a family of four)
• Scott's Maze Adventures at Long & Scott Farms (passes for up to a family of four)
“We’re really excited about it,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting to win, it just looked like a good county so I filled out the form, and then I received a phone call a couple weeks later saying I had won.”
