Lake County closes operations center as storm passes by

RELEASE DATE: June 13, 2006

TAVARES — As planned, the Lake County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) raised its preparedness level from a Level III Monitoring to a modified Level II Partial Activation on Tuesday, June 13, for Tropical Storm Alberto. With no significant damage or power outages reported throughout the morning, the Emergency Operations Center and Citizens Information Line closed at noon.

“While the statewide hurricane exercise three weeks ago provided training for EOC staff, nothing can replace experience in preparing for a real-life storm,” said Jerry Smith, Director of the Lake County Emergency Management Division. “If nothing else, Tropical Storm Alberto was our chance to test the implementation of new programs and improve existing operations.”

EOC staff worked diligently to ready a public shelter and other necessary storm preparations, however, most plans were never enacted as Tropical Storm Alberto passed well to the west of Lake County with little impact. According to data collected from the Florida Automated Weather Network, Lake County received about 3 inches of rain as a result of the tropical storm.

Residents are encouraged to be prepared for this expected busy hurricane season by stockpiling a disaster-supply kit and organizing a family-disaster plan. For preparation information, call the Lake County Emergency Management Division at (352) 343-9420 or log on to www.lakegovernment.com.
