EUSTIS — Lake And Sumter Emergency Recovery (LASER) will be packaging meals for the Haitian relief effort on Thursday, Jan. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Volunteers wishing to help with the effort are required to register by Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 4 p.m. A registration form is available at the LASER office, located at 27 E. Pinehurst Blvd. in Eustis, by calling (352) 483-1029 or e-mailing email@example.com.
LASER is providing a unique opportunity for residents of Lake and Sumter counties to directly provide relief for Haiti as the Eustis-based not-for-profit agency is partnering with Kids Against Hunger to package more than 30,000 meals. The meals packaged at LASER in Eustis will be delivered by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office to Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport for distribution in Haiti. The meals, which cost about 23 cents apiece, include healthy, vitamin-rich foods, such as rice and soy.
“It’s incredible that we — residents of Lake and Sumter counties — will have this opportunity in a hands-on relief effort,” said Michael Tart, Executive Director of LASER.
LASER has already begun its relief efforts as it assisted in transporting several pallets of food and medical supplies.
“We transported 12,000 meals to Fort Lauderdale late Monday night, assisted in loading them on a plane and they were flown over Tuesday morning and in the hands of people there by 12 p.m.,” said Leisa Butler, Coordinator for LASER.
