TAVARES — Interim County Manager Sandy Minkoff proposed at this week’s meeting of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners that Commissioners review the budget of the Library Services Division during the comprehensive review of the entire County budget.
Commissioners had previously heard a proposal on Feb. 16 to close one of the County’s public libraries to help close a budget gap. The Board was scheduled to consider the library-closing proposal at its March 2 meeting, but that discussion has been cancelled.
Several developments have occurred since the Board originally discussed the library budget issue. According to staff, the owner of one of the leased library facilities is working with the County on a new agreement and library personnel have explored the possibility of using temporary employees, funded from the current budget year, to help keep all County libraries open until the County Commission can review the entire County budget.
Each year, Lake County begins its budgeting process for the upcoming fiscal year (October-September) in January. The Board of County Commissioners reviews budget details at advertised work sessions during the spring and summer, which the public is encouraged to attend. After changes and amendments, the budget is adopted at public hearings in September.
