PAISLEY — If there seems like a lot more roadway construction on County roads these days that’s because there is; and much of it is being funded from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Ten roadway projects are in various stages of construction. Some are finishing this month or next, while others will continue into the summer. For example, the shoulders of County Road 42 are currently being widened for about 5 miles from west of Holmes View Drive to the entrance of Clearwater Lake Recreation Area. The total $1.2 million project is being funded by stimulus funding and a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation.
“It’s a more lengthy process than some of the other projects that are strictly milling and paving,” said Heath McArdle, Senior Construction Inspector for Lake County Department of Public Works, Funding & Production Division.
To widen the shoulder on County Road 42, the contractor must excavate about three feet on both sides of the road and then compact limestone in the area before resurfacing. The project is slated to be completed in September.
A few of the projects that are wrapping up at the end of this month include resurfacing Lake Griffin Road between Lemon Street and Grays Airport Road; County Road 466A from Cutoff Road to U.S. Highway 27/441; Eagles Nest Road from U.S. Highway 27 to Ridge Road; and Goose Prairie Road from Emeralda Road to County Road 452.
“While each job is slightly different than the other, most include some type of shoulder improvement and new sod,” McArdle said.
Other Lake County Department of Public Works’ projects funded by federal stimulus dollars include:
- Resurfacing County Road 19A between Dodson Cutoff Road and Azalea Drive
- Resurfacing County Road 455 between State Road 19 and County Road 561
- Resurfacing of Lakeshore Drive between Preston Cove Road and King Fisher Drive
- Resurfacing of County Road 474 between State Road 33 and U.S. Highway 27.
- Resurfacing, paved shoulders and intersection improvements of County Road 448
