Public Safety reminds residents to change batteries in smoke detectors, weather radios for daylight-saving time

RELEASE DATE: March 11, 2010

TAVARES — The Lake County Department of Public Safety would like to remind all County residents to change the batteries in their smoke detectors and NOAA weather radios for daylight-saving time on Sunday, March 14.

Daylight-saving time begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday. Fire officials across the nation encourage homeowners to replace batteries in smoke detectors when they change their clocks because it provides a convenient reminder.

While it is recommended that batteries be replaced in smoke detectors and NOAA weather radios semi-annually, these devices should also be tested at least once a month. The proper maintenance of smoke detectors and NOAA weather radios can significantly increase the chances of surviving a house fire or natural disaster. Coupled with a family escape plan, operational smoke detectors and NOAA weather radios can save lives.

For more information, call the Lake County Department of Public Safety at (352) 343-9458.
