Lake County employee selected as probation officer of the year by the Fla. Association of Community Corrections

RELEASE DATE: June 22, 2006

TAVARES — The Florida Association of Community Corrections (FACC) recently announced Lake County Probation Officer Kirsten Mabry was selected as “Adult Line Officer of the Year.”

South Lake Connector
Mabry will receive the prestigious officer of the year award at the FACC Annual Training Conference from June 28-30 in St. Petersburg. According to the FACC Web site, the award honors someone at the line officer level who has done an exemplary job within the criminal justice system. This year the association is honoring a probation officer from each of the adult and juvenile systems.

“Kirsten is one of the most capable, competent, dedicated and positive probation officers I have worked with over the last 20 years,” said Tony Deaton, Director of the Lake County Department of Community Services, Probation Services Division. “She serves as a liaison with the courts, effectively supervising hundreds of cases each year, including sex offenders and offenders on electronic monitoring. I am proud that she works for our agency and most fortunate that she works in my Division.”

Mabry began her career with the Lake County Clerk of Courts Office in 1987 as a court clerk in the traffic division. Her knowledge of misdemeanor offenses helped her secure a position in the Lake County Probation Services Division. Her 14 years of experience as a probation officer has helped her succeed in the position, but her warm personality is as much to credit for her success.

“I just like to work with people,” she said. “A lot of people might think probation is not a flattering or glamorous job, but it is a humbling experience. I try to enforce the law while helping these people get back on their feet.”

Mabry currently handles about 280 of the 1,200 offender cases supervised by the Lake County Probation Services Division. She has been involved with FACC over the last decade and her recent honor with the state association will be sent to the American Probation and Parole Association for consideration at the national level.

“I was very floored when I found out I had been nominated,” she said. “There’s a lot of probation officers in Florida. I am very honored by this.”
