Lake County, Central Fla. Sports Commission to host 2006 Junior U.S. Open Water Ski Championships

RELEASE DATE: January 24, 2006

OKAHUMPKA — The Sixth Annual Junior U.S. Open Water Ski Championships, a two-round, world-record capability water-ski competition, will be held June 3-4 at Jack Travers' International Tournament Skiing at Sunset Lakes in Okahumpka.

"This is another excellent opportunity for Lake County to promote itself as an outdoor recreational destination," said Greg Mihalic, Director of the Lake County Department of Economic Development and Tourism. "In addition, this particular junior water-skiing championship will bring more than a million dollars to the community."

Hosted by the Lake County Department of Economic Development and Tourism and the Central Florida Sports Commission, the event will feature junior men and women divisions (ages 17 to 21), in addition to the boys and girls divisions (ages 16 and under). Nearly 100 athletes are expected to compete for titles in slalom, tricks, jumping and overall.

"The Central Florida Sports Commission and the Lake County Department of Economic Development and Tourism are extremely honored and excited to co-host such a prestigious national event for the first time," said John Saboor, Executive Director of the Central Florida Sports Commission. "This championship, combined with the 2004 Junior World Championships that was held at Jack Travers' International Tournament Skiing at Sunset Lakes, continues to define Lake County as one of the world's most recognized water-skiing communities."

Sunset Lakes is located on 110 acres in Okahumpka, an unincorporated Lake County community south of the City of Leesburg. Sunset Lakes has hosted multiple water-ski events in past years, including the 2004 Junior Water Ski World Championships and numerous state and regional championships. Jack Travers, the owner of Sunset Lakes and head coach at Jack Travers' International Tournament Skiing, is a multiple-time U.S. Team coach and three-time Pan American Games Team coach.
