TAVARES — VolunteerLAKE, Lake County’s Volunteer Center, is sponsoring Teen Academy: Public Service (TAPS), which offers teens, ages 13 to 15, rewarding and life changing work in the form of unpaid community service internships.
“We believe, by engaging young people in their County Government today, we can produce a generation of leaders who are socially conscious and dedicated to public service,” said Helena Osborne-Ponsi, Lake County’s Volunteer Center Director. “The selected TAPS interns will gain job and leadership skills and learn more about the inner-workings of County Government.”
The three-week program begins July 12 and continues until July 29. Interested students must apply by Friday, June 18. Applicants will be selected by June 23. Requirements of TAPS participants include:
- Students must be between the ages of 13-15 by July 12.
- Participants must agree to serve 32 volunteer service hours per week, Monday through Thursday, eight hours a day.
- Students must participate in the program orientation with guardian on June 28, one session on a Tuesday evening of Teen Court in Action and all group activities on July 12, 19 & 26.
Applications are available to download. Interested students can also pick up an application at VolunteerLAKE, located at 1300 S. Duncan Drive, Building E, Tavares.
TAPS is limited to nine volunteers. If the teen’s guardian is a Lake County employee, the teen will be prohibited from serving in the family member’s section. Teen participants will earn community service hours to help fulfill their graduation and scholarship requirements.
