TAVARES — The public is invited to the quarterly meeting of the Lake County Historical Society on Friday, July 28, at 12:40 p.m. at the Tavares Civic Center, located at 100 E. Caroline St.
Guest speaker at the meeting will be Lake County Clerk of Courts Jim Watkins. He will speak about the general history of Lake County and the restoration of the Lake County Historical Courthouse.
In 1922, Lake County floated a $250,000 bond issue to build the courthouse located at 317 W. Main St. Completed two years later, the courthouse is the architectural centerpiece of the Lake County Government complex in downtown Tavares.
In 1964, the County erected a modern façade to “update” the historical courthouse. The façade was torn down in 1996 and the building was restored to its former glory with assistance of a state grant. The renovated building opened on Nov. 11, 1997, and currently houses the Lake County Historical Museum, Tax Collector’s office, Property Appraiser’s office, Lake County Historical Society, Lake County Office of Information Technology and Geographic Information Systems Division.
