TAVARES — The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), Lake-Sumter, Fla. Chapter recently awarded James “JB” Blackwell with the Fire Safety Commendation Award for his devotion and commitment to Fire Safety within Lake County.
Blackwell, who has worked for the Lake County Public Safety Department for 24 years, currently serves as a Fire Inspector for the Fire Rescue Division. His 26 years of experience includes two years as a volunteer firefighter for the County before becoming employed as a full-time firefighter in October 1987. He was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant in 1989, and moved from the field into overseeing Lake County’s fire inspection program in 2004.
The Fire Safety Commendation award is presented to an individual for accomplishments or outstanding contributions in an area of fire safety and service, and can be given by the SAR national, state or local chapter.
“The award is not limited to firefighters,” said Tom Mysinger, SAR Second Vice President. “It may be presented to recognize dedicated citizens [who’s goal it is to] protect human life and property by preventing injuries or casualties due to fire and chemicals.”
Blackwell has contributed his experience and expertise to a number of Lake County Fire Rescue initiatives. Some of his contributions include serving as system administrator for the Inspection/Pre-plan Program and administrator of the school inspection program. He is also the “B” shift Safety Officer, responsible for fire safety inspections and assisting the State Fire Marshal with investigations. Blackwell was a key contributor to the development of Fire Rescue’s Forward Operations Unit, which provides an immediate, on-location command post for rapid emergency response, and served as an original member of the Lake County Fire Rescue’s Special Operations Response Team.
SAR is a historical, educational, and patriotic non-profit, that perpetuates the memory of the men who, by their services or sacrifices during the war of the American Revolution, achieved the independence of the American people.
