STARKE, FLA. — Lake County Fire Rescue’s Special Operations Response Team (SORT) was one of three hazardous materials teams throughout the state to participate in the third annual “Operation Integration” exercise hosted by the Florida National Guard at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center on March 8.
The event provided an opportunity for emergency responders from around the state to train for a mass casualty response in a simulated large-scale natural disaster scenario.
“This is a significant milestone,” said Jim Dickerson, Assistant Chief of Operations for the Lake County Public Safety Department. “Since 2004, Lake County Fire Rescue has been rebuilding SORT with the goal of becoming a state recognized Type II Hazardous Materials Response Team.”
During the day-long exercise, SORT members performed reconnaissance, victim removal, sample gathering and hazardous materials mitigation of a mock meth-lab.
Lake County Fire Rescue SORT members include Lieutenants Mike Bass, Kirk Biccum, Ed Genter III, Barry Fitzgerald, and Jeremy Searcy, along with Firefighters Nick Ryon, Glen Nicol, William Jenkins II, Mike Quick, Scott Woodruff, Carter Cork, Tim Judy, Ryan Carroll, Clayton Vaughn, Chris Cuellar and Fire Mechanic Josh Crisp.
