Park Rangers invite participants to learn how to identify and use native plants in landscaping

RELEASE DATE: June 8, 2011

LEESBURG — The Lake County Parks & Trails Division will conduct an native plant information hike on Saturday, June 11 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Palatlakaha Environmental and Agricultural Reserve (PEAR Park), located at 4800 University Ave., Leesburg.

The hike will give participants an opportunity to learn how to identify native plants, and how best to incorporate them into their landscaping and gardens.

PEAR Park is the largest County park at 318 acres, and is divided into two distinct areas. The “Gateway,” or front 50 acres, is being developed into an active recreation area. The remaining 268 acres is a preserve dedicated to the area’s historic ecosystem including areas for the threatened Florida Scrub-Jay and declining Northern Bobwhite “Quail” and Eastern Meadowlark. Along with the Xeric and native butterfly gardens, the 268 acres also boasts a community garden, nature center, two scenic pavilions and access to hiking and nature trails.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars and field guides, along with water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat and hiking shoes. Space is limited, so reservations are encouraged.

For more information or reservations, call the Lake County Parks & Trails Division at (352) 253-4950, e-mail parksandtrails@lakecountyfl.gov or log on to www.lakecountyfl.gov/parks.
