LEESBURG - Lake-Sumter Community College, in partnership with Lake Community Action Agency, is offering weatherization training for Lake County contractors starting July 28. Developed by the Florida Department of Community Affairs, the three-day program prepares contractors for a variety of in-field situations and aids them in dealing with situations that support the success of the state’s Weatherization Assistance Program.
The first day (July 28) focuses on the processes necessary for contractors to register to bid for projects awarded under the WAP program, as well as the administrative procedures associated with reporting by successful bidders. This session is hosted by LCAA at its Eustis facility, at 1217 Huffstetler Drive.
The next two sessions, August 1 and 2, are to be presented by McNeal and White Contractors on LSCC’s Leesburg Campus. This hands-on training covers the various tasks that contractors may encounter during a weatherization job, and will address “Florida Workmanship Standards,” proper health and safety standards, and jobsite lead-safe practices. Contractors successfully completing this weatherization program will be qualified to submit bids through LCAA for WAP-funded projects on behalf of qualifying Lake County residents.
“To support the county’s goals of reducing energy consumption and increasing the use of energy-saving measures, it is important that we have a local workforce ready to meet these demands,” states Lori Barnes, sustainability planner and manager of the EECBG Grant for the Lake County Board of County Commissioners. “The benefits available to Lake County homeowners through the Weatherization Assistance Program are tremendous and we need local contractors who are trained to handle these projects.”
Weatherization is the third in a series of LSCC education programs that provide training under Lake County’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant project. The grant promotes energy efficiency in construction and retrofit projects, while providing a pathway to energy-related jobs for the Lake County workforce.
