TAVARES — The Lake Soil & Water Conservation District (LSWCD) announced the winners of the annual poster and speech contests that were held on Nov. 17. Alex Sainz, a sixth grade student at Lake Montessori and Learning Institute, won first place for the speech contest. The first place winners of the poster contest are Gabi Moser (Grades K-1), Deanna Ern (Grades 2-3), Nicholas Keiper (Grades 4-6), Hope Friedrich (Grades 7-9) and Iman Seale (Grades 10-12).
Nine contestants gave speeches that were judged on content, composition, delivery and time for the theme “Should food crops be used for fuel?”. By winning at the local level, Sainz is eligible to compete at the Area 3 Association of Florida Conservation Districts’ contest in May 2012.
The poster contest had over 150 entries, and focused on the theme, “Soil to Spoon.”
