BUSHNELL — The Lake County Extension Office, in partnership with the Citrus, Hernando, Sumter and Pasco County Extension Offices, will be hosting the upcoming AGRItunity 2012 Conference on Saturday, Jan. 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the West Central Florida Agricultural Education Center located at 7620 State Road 471, Bushnell. A pre-conference farm tour and hydroponics workshop will be held on Friday, Jan. 27.
The AGRItunity 2012 Conference includes eight workshops, a large tradeshow, animal exhibits, antique farm equipment and more. The keynote speaker will be Ben Hewitt, an author and farmer, who will be giving a talk entitled, “The Future’s in the Dirt: Digging into localized agriculture and its potential to revitalize health, environment and regional economies.”
The cost of the conference is $15 for those that pre-register, or $20 at the door. Lunch is available onsite for $10 from the Speckled Butterbean.
The pre-conference farm tour and hydroponics workshop will both begin at the West Central Florida Agricultural Education Center. The farm tour will last from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will feature a bus tour of farms containing livestock and crops in Hernando and Pasco counties. The cost of the farm tour is $30, and includes lunch and transportation. The hydroponic workshop, entitled “ABC’s of Hydroponic Production”, will be from 12 to 4:30 p.m., and will highlight information on media choices, production systems, types of crops, nutrient solutions and more. At 3 p.m., participants will drive their own vehicle to tour The X-Farms. The cost of the workshop is $20 and includes lunch.
