TAVARES — The Lake Soil & Water Conservation District (LSWCD), in partnership with the Florida Forest Service, will be giving away bare-root tree seedlings on Thursday, Jan. 19, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Lake County Agricultural Center’s Horticultural Learning Center at the Discovery Gardens, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares.
Each person will be allowed one tree of each available variety: Dogwood, Red Maple, Sabal Palm, Redbud, Myrtle Leaf Holly and Pine on a first-come, first-served basis. The trees are 6 to 18-inch seedlings and are free, but donations will be accepted. Over 1,500 trees are given away each year at the event, and a representative from the Florida Forest Service will be on-hand to answer questions about planting and care of the trees.
Established by the Florida Legislature, the LSWCD promotes and encourages preserving and enhancing the quality of life in Lake County through conservation of its natural resources. An elected five member non-partisan board of supervisors, who volunteer their services, governs the LSWCD.
The LSWCD also hosts annual educational programs, like the speech and poster contests, Envirothon and land judging competitions.
