Lake County Public Transportation Division stresses safety with LakeXpress camera initiative

RELEASE DATE: February 10, 2012

TAVARES – The Lake County Public Transportation Division has implemented a new safety initiative, in which all LakeXpress buses will be equipped with onboard video cameras. This new measure aims to provide a safer riding environment for both passengers and drivers, as officials are able to closely monitor activity on the vessels.

“Security is our premier concern and this will enhance the safety and security of our passengers and our drivers,” said Ken Harley, Public Transportation Manager for the Lake County Public Transportation Division.

There will be six cameras on fixed-route buses and five cameras on paratransit vehicles. These cameras will automatically capture video while the buses are running. The buses are also equipped with GPS technology so officials can precisely locate a bus at any time.

LakeXpress operates Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fares for LakeXpress are $1 for all trips. Half-fares are available for riders 60 years or older, students and individuals with disabilities (buses are equipped with lifts). Free fares are available for children under five years of age, who are accompanied by a fare-paying chaperone.

LakeXpress’ four routes include Route 1 running from The Villages to Eustis, primarily on U.S. Highway 441; Route 2 circulating in downtown Leesburg; Route 3 circulating in downtown Mount Dora; and Route 4 running from the Altoona Post Office on State Road 19 to the community of Zellwood on U.S. Highway 441 where passengers can transfer to LYNX route 44.
