RELEASE DATE: May 17, 2012

TAVARES – The Lake County Parks & Trails Division is inviting residents to attend events for the week of May 20-26. The week’s scheduled events are as follows:

• On Thursday, May 24, the Monthly Bird and Butterfly Survey will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Palatlakaha Environmental and Agricultural Reserve (PEAR Park) Nature Center, located at 4800 University Ave. in Leesburg.

Volunteers are encouraged to assist Parks Rangers in monitoring the effects of restoration and land management on the long-term biodiversity of the reserve. Experience is a plus but not required. Survey-takers must bring binoculars and field guides.

• On Friday, May 25, there will be a Monthly Bird and Butterfly Survey at the Ferndale Preserve, located at 19220 County Road 455 in Ferndale, from 7 to 11 a.m.

This is the monthly census of the birds and butterflies on the preserve and volunteers are encouraged to help Parks Rangers in this effort. Experience is a plus but not required and survey-takers must bring binoculars and field guides.

• A hike through the Palatlakaha River Park, located at 12325 Hull Road in Clermont, is scheduled for Saturday, May 26 from 8 to 10 a.m.

On this hike, participants will explore the numerous ecosystems that make up this small, but diverse park, including the many acres that are managed for Florida Scrub-jays.

All events are free and would-be participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat and hiking shoes. Reservations are encouraged, but not required.

For more information about upcoming events, or to make reservations to attend one of the events, call the Lake County Parks & Trails Division at 352-253-4950, email parksandtrails@lakecountyfl.gov or log on to www.lakecountyfl.gov/parks.
