Lake County encourages citizens to ‘clean house’ with upcoming Household Chemical Collection event

RELEASE DATE: July 6, 2012

MINNEOLA – The Lake County Solid Waste Division, in conjunction with Covanta Energy, Inc., will hold a Household Chemical Collection event on Thursday, July 12 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Minneola City Hall parking lot, located at 800 N. U. S. Highway 27 in Minneola.

This event will provide residents with an easy and efficient way to dispose of unwanted household chemical products such as lawn and gardening materials, photo and swimming pool chemicals, mercury-containing thermostats and thermometers, paint and related products, cleaning solutions, motor oil and used gas, batteries, fluorescent lamps, light bulbs and small propane tanks.

Materials such as infectious waste, solvents, chemical laboratory waste and radioactive waste are not permitted.

Lake County has teamed up with Covanta Energy, Inc. in an effort to effectively reduce the amount of mercury that is introduced into the environment. Mercury awareness and collection programs are vital tools that inform and educate the public about mercury-bearing items and ways they should be properly discarded. Covanta Energy, Inc. will also give away $5 Walmart gift cards to residents who turn-in items containing mercury.

For more information about the Household Chemical Collection event, or upcoming collection events, call the Lake County Solid Waste Division at 352-343-3776 or visit www.lakecountyfl.gov/departments/public_works/solid_waste/mobile_unit_schedule.aspx.
