TAVARES – The Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission (EDC) is currently seeking nominations for its William C. Schwartz Industry Innovation Award. This award honors local businesses that have demonstrated their innovation in products and services, processes, technologies, partnerships or business operations.
The deadline to nominate a business is Friday, July 27 at 5 p.m. Those wishing to submit a business for consideration can fill out the nomination form online, which can be accessed by visiting the Metro Orlando EDC website at www.orlandoedc.com/Schwartz/2012. Last year, Lake County was well-represented as the City of Tavares and WattNext, Inc. were recipients of the prestigious award.
The City of Tavares was recognized for implementing a successful downtown master plan, in which an $8 million marina project was designed and constructed along the waterfront in downtown. The city was also rebranded as “America’s Seaplane City,” which has helped transform its downtown area into a thriving entertainment district.
WattNext, Inc., located in Eustis, was acknowledged for developing a solar array shade structure called “Watt Tree,” which connects solar power, electric vehicles and the smart grid. WattNext, Inc. is the first for-profit spin-out company from the Lake County-based, non-profit environmental technology business incubator, RubeLab.
Lake County partners with the Metro Orlando EDC in an effort to help facilitate business expansion and economic development throughout the county. In addition, Lake County offers a number of business incentive programs and has opened two full-service Business Opportunity Centers that provide support, training, business tools and more to assist local entrepreneurs and start-up companies.
