TAVARES – The Lake County Parks & Trails Division is inviting residents to attend events for the week of Sept. 9-15. The week’s scheduled events are as follows:
• On Friday, Sept. 14, an event entitled “A Home for Tortoises” will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Pasture Reserve, located on Lake Erie Road (N 28° 28’43.80” W 81° 52’42.19”) in Groveland.
At this event, participants will learn about the important role Gopher Tortoises play in the ecosystem, and the efforts currently being made to improve the animal’s habitat through their re-introduction to native plant species.
• The North American Migration Count is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, with a morning and evening session. The morning session will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Palatlakaha Environmental and Agricultural Reserve (PEAR Park) Nature Center, located at 4800 University Ave. in Leesburg. The evening session will be held at Ferndale Preserve, located at 19220 County Road 455 in Ferndale, from 5 to 8 p.m.
During both sessions, Park Rangers will lead participants as they try to catch a “snap-shot” of various birds during their annual fall migrations across North America. Park Rangers will also go in-depth on why birds migrate, as well as the effects migrations have on birds and various ecosystems.
All events are free and would-be participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat and hiking shoes. Pre-registration is recommended, but not required.
