UMATILLA — Due to potentially rainy conditions brought on by Tropical Storm Ernesto, Lake County officials are announcing the cancellation of a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 31, at 10 a.m. for the 96-acre North Lake Community Park, formerly named Northeast Community Park. The groundbreaking ceremony has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 9:30 a.m.
Located north of the City of Umatilla, the park will feature soccer and football fields, baseball diamonds, tennis and racquetball courts, a picnic area, restrooms and a playground. The estimated $15 million project is expected to take longer than a year and a half to complete. Lake County last month received a $200,000 state grant to help develop the park.
When completed, the park will be the largest recreational complex for the Lake County Department of Public Works, Parks and Trails Division. Formerly an orange grove, staff is currently clearing the land for the groundbreaking ceremony. Because the site is undeveloped, guests are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear.
Lake County is providing bus transportation to the groundbreaking site from the Lake County Administration Building, located at 315 W. Main St., Tavares. To reserve a seat for the bus, call the Parks and Trails Division at (352) 253-4948.
