TAVARES – The wait is finally over for hordes of birding and wildflower enthusiasts, as the inaugural Wings and Wildflowers Festival is underway in Lake County. The festival is set for Sept. 28-30, with an array of events taking place at Hickory Point Recreational Park, located at 27341 State Road 19 in Tavares, and numerous field trips and activities also scheduled at key wildlife viewing areas throughout the County.
The highly anticipated, weekend-long festival is filled with over 100 scheduled events. Festival-goers can enjoy everything from wildlife photography hikes and guided kayak trips to bird watching expeditions and educational workshops, all focused on accentuating the beauty and significance of Lake County’s natural wonders.
The festival’s keynote speakers include James Currie, host of the popular adventure birding television show, Nikon’s Birding Adventures, which airs on NBC Sports; and John Moran, a renowned nature journalist and photographer, whose work has appeared in National Geographic, Life, Time, Newsweek, Smithsonian Magazine, New York Times Magazine and on the cover of the National Audubon Society Field Guide to Florida.
In addition, the festival will host the Florida Wildflower Foundation’s 2012 Florida Wildflower Symposium, which will feature numerous activities that highlight native wildflowers and encourage preservation. The Symposium is open to all festival attendees, with events that include Nature & Wildflower Photography, Start Gardening with Wildflowers, Attracting Butterflies with Native Plants, Florida Wildflower Travelogue and the Wildflower Wingding barbecue.
Though online event registration has closed, those who still wish to participate in the festivities are encouraged to visit the on-site registration booth at Hickory Point Recreational Park. The registration booth is open Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with all available openings being reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cash and checks will be accepted as payment for events requiring a fee.
