Lake County Commissioner appointed to Healthy Kids Board

RELEASE DATE: August 31, 2006

TAVARES — The Florida Department of Financial Services recently announced Lake County Commissioner Debbie Stivender was appointed to the Board of the Florida Healthy Kids Corporation for a three-year term beginning Aug. 22.

Debbie Stivender
STIVENDER

A lifelong resident of Tavares, Commissioner Stivender has represented District 3 since 2000. She is passionate about meeting the needs of children and families in Lake County as her community service interests include the Safe Climate Coalition of Lake County, Early Learning Coalition, Altrusa International, Boys and Girls Club of Lake and Sumter County, Children’s Services Council, Shared Services Network and Christian Social Services.

“It is an honor to be appointed to Florida Healthy Kids,” Stivender said. “I hope my participation in this organization will not only help those children here in Lake County that have benefited from this program, but will make those not funded aware of the service — all children need medical coverage.”

The Florida Healthy Kids Corporation arranges healthcare coverage for Florida’s uninsured children. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, an increasing number of children dropped out of the ranks of the insured. The retreat by employers from subsidies for family health insurance and a retreat by federal and state governments from expansions of Medicaid for children are thought to have significantly influenced this trend.

The Florida Healthy Kids Corporation was established in 1990 by the Florida Legislature as a private/public agent of change in the health insurance marketplace to address this problem. The Corporation now has operating sites in all 67 counties. Since the program’s inception, more than half a million children have been covered through Healthy Kids and more than 300,000 today continue to enjoy a benefit structure with broad coverage — from immunizations to transplants.
