County seeks grant applications for emergency food & shelter programs

RELEASE DATE: November 29, 2012

TAVARES — Lake County has been awarded federal funds in the amount of $134,880, made available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. Lake County has been chosen to receive the funds in order to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the County.

A Local Board made up of representatives from county government, United Way, The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, advocates for the homeless, faith-based organizations and other community partners will determine how the funds awarded to Lake County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:

  1. Be a private voluntary nonprofit or unit of government
  2. For private voluntary organizations, a voluntary board must be established
  3. Eligible to receive federal funds
  4. Have an accounting system
  5. Practice nondiscrimination
  6. Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs

Qualifying agencies are urged to apply. The deadline for applications to be received is Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at 5 p.m.

Lake County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously with Catholic Charities of Central Florida; Christian Care Center; Haven of Lake & Sumter Counties; Lake Community Action Agency; The Salvation Army of Lake County; and United Way of Lake & Sumter Counties.  These agencies were responsible for providing 52,827 meals and assisting 192 individuals with rent/mortgage and utility payments.

The Local Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.
