Cooler weather offers opportunities to observe birds, various wildlife

RELEASE DATE: January 18, 2013

TAVARES — The Lake County Parks & Trails Division invites nature enthusiasts to explore Lake County’s outdoor amenities at three upcoming events while the weather is milder.

  • Beginning Birder Class – Part 1
    9 to 11 a.m. or 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23
    PEAR Park – Nature Center, 4800 University Ave., Leesburg, FL 34748
    Discuss the basics of birding ethics, optics and field guides.
  • Woodland Bird Walk
    8 to 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25
    Lake May Reserve, County Road 44A, Eustis
    A guided hike with an expert birder to help participants find and learn about birds at this birding hotspot.
  • Basic Rock and Mineral Course
    8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26
    PEAR Park – Nature Center, 4800 University Ave., Leesburg, FL 34748
    Learn about how common and uncommon rocks and minerals are classified, as well as how to identify various samples. Bring lunch. Reservation required. Call 352-314-9335.
  • Winter Wildlife Walk
    8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26
    Ferndale Preserve, 19220 County Road 455, Ferndale
    An opportunity to explore the abundant wildlife and beautiful vistas.
  • Evening Winter Wildlife Walk
    3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 26
    Ellis Acres Reserve, 25302 County Road 42, Paisley
    Enjoy a rare evening stroll to see the wildlife in their natural habitat.

All events are free, and pre-registration is recommended because of space limitations. To maximize the nature experience for outside events, participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, field guides, water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat and hiking shoes.
