SORRENTO — Residents of the Sorrento community are encouraged to attend the “Party in the Park” on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sorrento Park, located at 31535 Church St.
The event is the first for a new program, “Pride, Parks, Pleasure Project,” which was developed by the Lake County Parks and Trails Division and Volunteer Program to encourage local communities to rejuvenate and enhance some of their local parks.
Due to vandalism and lack of use, the cozy neighborhood park has fallen on hard times. Clean-up tools will be provided at the event for the participants to paint over vandalism and rake up trash. The event will also include music, a basketball competition, face painting, refreshments and spirited games of checkers, dominoes and chess.
“This event will serve two purposes,” said Bobby Bonilla, Director of the Lake County Department of Public Works, Parks and Trails Division. “We are trying to clean up the park and also identify volunteers who would be willing to participate in the Pride, Parks, Pleasure Project on a regular basis.
“We desperately need to see who is interested in helping us out,” Bonilla added. “If not, the vandalism problems are not going to get any better unless we get some participation from the community.”
Sponsors of the “Party in the Park” include the Lake County Board of County Commissioners, Sorrento Christian Center and the East Lake County Chamber of Commerce.
